Smith & Wesson Historian Dr. Roy G. Jinks told me quite some time ago Smith & Wesson's plant produced the first three Chiefs Specials on this date, October 24, 1950. It was a Tuesday. He said serial number 6 was one of those.

Think of it ... seventy-five years ago today the first J-frame, five-shot, .38 S&W Special was born. The company delivered serial number 6 to Smith & Wesson President Carl Hellstrom on Friday, October 27, 1950.

Lots of water under the bridge and lots of changes and offspring spawned since that day.
