I don’t care much for muzzle breaks, even on big guns. With my 6’4”, 235 lb frame I’m not too affected by the recoil of common hunting calibers. And, I never notice recoil while hunting, only when leaning into the bench.
If I’m shooting a thumper for the first time I carry a towel to the range and fold it a few times as a cushion. If I decide the guns a keeper I’ll install a Kick-eez pad on it.
One thing that generally helps at the bench is to elevate the rest and use an extra tall rear bag. This way you’re setting upright a little more and this allows your shoulder to move and absorb the jolt.
