Featherweight rifles that punch above their weight

I’ve been hunting steep ridgelines with a sub-7 pound bolt gun and man, the difference is real, I have less fatigue, quicker transitions and easier pack weight. I also run lighter barrels, carbon stocks and stick with reliable actions that don’t complain. What lightweight rigs do you trust for mountain glassing and long hikes?

Totally, sub-7 lb changes hikes. I run a carbon-stocked Bergara and a lightweight Tikka action with a fluted barrel. What actions or stocks have held up for you?

For those steep climbs, you need something like an F-150 engine in a Civic's frame. I usually go with a custom build that has a Proof Research barrel and a titanium action. This cuts down on weight but it's still super accurate.

I'm all about light rifles when I hunt in the mountains. I prefer bolt guns under 7 pounds with carbon stocks that won't fail me on a long hike. Less weight means less tired and I can keep my scope steady

I tried the 4.5lb Howa Superlite. It feels like a feather, even scoped it was shy of 6lbs. However, very fussy in loads that will shoot and the best accuracy was 2 moa. I eventually sold it. I have heard reports from others that have experienced excellent sub-moa accuracy from these so maybe mine was made on a Monday?

I'm not quite ready to compromise stability for weight savings yet.
I getting closer to it as I close in on 60 though.

7.5 pounds without scope; in 308 (my other rifles are twice the weight).

If I need to loose more weight, I stop eating pasta for a few days

Once you drop that extra weight, you're not just lighter but you can also aim faster after a tough climb. Heavy guns are for people who live where it's flat. Carbon fiber barrels pretty much save relationships and knees
