Thinking about a road trip to visit some family soon and of course, I want to bring my firearm along. The catch is the route goes through New York, which always complicates things. I've been looking at maps and avoiding NY adds a crazy amount of time to the drive. Just wondering if anyone else has faced this situation and what choices you made. I could use some advice on this; I'm more than open to suggestions on routes or any tips to make it easier.

Hi Alan,

since you didn't get an answer yet .... note that I'm not a lawyer, and don't even play one on TV. If I understand right, your could take a rifle, and store it in your vehicle separately from your ammo. For a handgun you would need a NY license.

Roland.

I believe if your handgun is unloaded, in a locked container, in your trunk or otherwise not in a place that is accessible in the driver compartment, you should be OK. Oh, and one other thing, you can't stop in NYC. Not even for gas. Never consent to a search without a warrant signed by a Judge.
Just my 2 cents.

I have to drive through Illinois a couple times a year and and they are stupid as well.
This is what I do.
Rest area/gas station before state line and fill up. Put firearms in one suitcase and ammunition in another suitcase. Set cruise 3 mph above speed limit, do not stop in Illinois for anything and certainly don't spend any money.
First major exit gas station in next state, put things back to normal and continue on.
I would probably do the same thing if I were to travel through NY again.
