I’m thinking about taking my little one fishing for the first time. They’re 5 and really curious about all the outdoors stuff, but I’m totally new to this myself. I saw some colorful kid-sized fishing rods at Target, and I'm wondering if those are a good bet to start with. What kind of bait works best for beginners? Just looking for some simple advice to make it a fun day out.

I still remember the first time my dad took me out with a tiny red-and-white bobber, I must have been 6 or 8. The line got tangled, I spilled worms on the dock, but it was still magic. Its funny how those messy starts stay the clearest memory

I took my nephew once when he was about that age...weather turned quick, wind whipped the lake hard, and we nearly lost our gear over the side. Ever since, I always check the forecast before heading out with kids

And to add...the real fun isn’t the catch, it’s sitting there with your kid and sharing time that’s free from distractions. Even if you don’t catch much, they’ll remember your patience and laughs far more than any trout

Pro tip: bring snacks!!! Hungry kid = cranky kid, and cranky kid will out-fish you in complaining every single time

When I was young, the best part wasn’t even fishing. It was getting dirty, chasing minnows, and pretending every bite was a monster fish...
